FAQs About Job-Hunting ID Photos | Answers from a Job-Hunting Photo Studio!

Passport photos are often taken at the start of the job search process.
Many job seekers come in for their photos feeling anxious.
In this post, we’ve compiled the questions we most frequently receive from customers regarding hairstyles, makeup, clothing, and facial expressions!

Should your resume photo show you smiling or looking serious?

Either is fine. It’s best to choose an expression that doesn’t look out of place when the interviewer compares your ID photo on the application form with your appearance during the interview. If your natural expression is a smile, then smiling in the photo is the best choice. If you’re not comfortable smiling, don’t force it; instead, choose an expression that conveys seriousness and sincerity to effectively showcase your appeal.

Does the photo on a resume determine whether you get the job?

It’s almost impossible to get a job offer based on a photo alone (though I can’t say for certain that it’s 100% impossible).
しHowever, it is possible to be rejected simply because your photo suggests a lack of basic manners or common sense.
At 19Studio, we conduct interviews with interviewers and HR representatives from publicly traded companies and use the insights gained to help you take professional headshots for your job search. Furthermore, since we are run by an IT company actively involved in recruitment, we have a deep understanding of the etiquette and common-sense expectations that employers look for.

Our staff is here to provide you with full support, so please feel free to leave it to us.

Should I wear a suit?

Be sure to wear a suit. If you are instructed to wear something other than a suit, choose an outfit appropriate for the industry.
*Note: For jobs such as announcer exams or positions in the apparel industry, you may be asked to provide casual outfit photos.

Do I need to wear a tie?

This is required when wearing a suit. For photo shoots, we also recommend a convenient one-touch tie.
At 19Studio, we offer free rentals of both standard ties and one touch ties.

Do I have to button the top button of my business shirt?

Be sure to button the top button. If buttoning the top button feels too tight around your neck, the shirt may not be the right size for you. Shirts come in not only S, M, and L sizes but also a variety of neck sizes, so be sure to choose one that fits you properly.

Do I have to part my bangs?

If the company has specific guidelines for applicants, please follow them. If there are no guidelines, a neat appearance is acceptable as long as your eyes are visible. It is preferable to have the same hairstyle you wore to the interview.

Does my hair have to be jet black?

A darker shade is best, but it doesn’t have to be jet black. If it’s too dark, it might look out of place and stand out, so a shade close to your natural hair color is ideal.
If there are specific guidelines, it’s safer to set the brightness slightly lower than what’s specified.

At 19Studio, we offer free darkening services. You can decide how dark you want your hair to be while looking at actual photos.

Should I wear less makeup?

It's fine as long as it's not too strong.
Keep “cleanliness” and “brightness” in mind, and try to wear the same makeup as you did for your interview.
Avoid flashy makeup with sequins or glitter. Depending on the industry, even eyeshadow with pearl particles may be frowned upon, so it’s safer to stick with matte shades.
Choose a lipstick shade that makes your complexion look healthy.

Is it okay to keep my glasses on?

If you plan to wear glasses during the interview, we recommend taking the photo while wearing them.

Is it possible to adjust facial features through retouching (such as changing the jawline, making the eyes look bigger, or correcting asymmetry)?

We can make minor adjustments to accommodate your preferences.

It’s best to keep any discrepancy between your actual appearance and your photo as minimal as possible, so please be mindful of how much you edit the photo. If you have any concerns, please feel free to consult with our staff.

What color would you like for the background?

The standard colors are white and blue. At 19Studio, many customers choose to have their photos taken in white.
White tends to give a fresh impression, while blue tends to give a serious impression.
