Tips for Great Photo Booth Pictures ①: Close the curtain tightly

Once you step into the booth, close the curtain tightly so that outside light does not get in.

The outcome of the photo changes depending on the light. Outside light affects the built-in lighting inside the booth, which changes how you look in the photo. Depending on where the booth is located or what time of day you use it, sunlight might enter, so always make sure to close the curtain firmly before shooting.

Be careful that the curtain doesn't flutter open in the wind. Especially with outdoor photo booths, the curtain can move due to wind during the shoot. Curtains in photo booths often have magnets attached, so check to make sure these magnets are securely fastened.

Did you know that ID photo booths sometimes have lighting installed near your feet as well?

If you have a lot of bags or large items, they might block the lighting. Therefore, be mindful of where you place your belongings.

If there is a designated spot for luggage inside the booth, please place your items there.

The inside of an ID photo booth is surprisingly small. Since there may not be enough space for luggage, it's best to bring as few belongings as possible when going to take your photo.

Be sure to carefully check and adjust the height of the stool. Sit on the stool with your back straight and align your face with the guide position on the screen.

While it might feel bothersome, this is a very important point.

If you shoot without adjusting the height of the stool, the position of your face in the photo may end up being too low or too high. Also, if you try to adjust your position by slouching or stretching up, your posture will look bad and unnatural.

A "reflector" is a tool used to reflect light onto a subject.

While the built-in lighting is bright enough to take good photos, preparing something to serve as a reflector and placing it on your lap makes it harder for shadows to appear on your face.

Most lighting in photo booths is located on the camera lens side. Since the light strikes the user directly from the front, shadows tend to form around the neck area. If light shines from below the face as well, it prevents shadows under the neck and makes the entire face look brighter.

Items that can serve as a reflector include flat, white items such as sketchbooks, white handkerchiefs, towels, cloth, or paper. During the shoot, placing them on your lap or holding them at chest height (so they don't appear in the frame) is fine. If you bring them too close to your face, the light may become too strong, causing the photo to be blown out (overexposed). It is good to use them while adjusting the height and position.

Can you retake photos in a photo booth?

Even if you pay attention to these points, taking a satisfying photo can still be difficult. Opportunities to use a photo booth are surprisingly rare. Few people can take a perfect picture on the first try in an unfamiliar shooting environment.

Many photo booths feature a retake function, allowing you to check the actual photo taken and try shooting again. Posture and face angles often reveal habits that you might not notice yourself. When choosing a photo, check not only your expression but also fine details such as posture, how you tuck your chin, and whether there are shadows on your face.
